AMERICAN SINGLE MALT

 

MADE FROM 100% MALTED BARLEY GROWN IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

 

Here’s what we chose for our grain bill, and why.

88% Pale malt Washington State Select 2-Row Malt

This is a Washington-grown malt workhorse that provides a great base flavor

8% Crystal 60L

Creates a Red/amber hue, a pronounced malty, toffee, caramel flavor and a clean, smooth finish

2% Pale chocolate from Thomas Fawcett & Sons

Adds a dark brown color and a mild chocolate /coffee / roasted flavor

2% Munich

Gives it a robust, rich, malt flavor

Our distillery, located at the family farm in Hood River, Oregon has a unique mission and production process that combines the experience of top distilleries around the country with the mastery and vision of Wanderback’s founder, Phil Downer. 

For Batch No. 1, Phil partnered with award winning Master Distiller Matt Hofmann and the team at Westland Distillery in Seattle, WA. 

It was a true pleasure to work side by side with Phil. I enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with Wanderback, and I’m proud of the unique single malt that we produced together.

AGED AT THE WANDERBACK FAMILY FARM IN HOOD RIVER, OREGON

 

Our distillery sits on the foothills of Mount Hood. We get cooler summer nights and hotter days, so our daily temperature swings during optimal aging season are greater. This is exactly what aging whiskey loves and it has a major influence on the final taste.

We age our whiskey on two of the three stories of our lovingly restored, 1924 red barn, each with differing temperatures throughout the year. We move the barrels up and down according to what they need at any particular time.
